Bible Bowl Competition
Purpose: To provide youth with the opportunity to display their knowledge of Biblical facts.
 
1. There is not a limit to the size of your team. Only 6 members should participate per round. The team may substitute members at the beginning of each round. The age range should be 10 – 22 years of age.
 
2. Bible Teams will receive questions and study statements on COGIC Doctrine, COGIC History, and the book of Jeremiah. Questions will be formed from the study sheets include in the SMM package.
 
3. Teams may be male, female, or mixed. Teams may consist of people from one church, a district, or a mixture of both. The Jr. and Sr. teams are combined into one team.
 
4. There will be one Moderator, the person who will read ALL questions. There will be four judges, one of which who will act as the timekeeper, and one who will act as the scorekeeper. The judges will have the final say in all disputes.
 
5. The answers do not have to be word for word. However, verbatim quotation of scriptures could help to ensure that a member receives full credit for their answers for COGIC doctrine and History questions (as appropriate). The scores for each round will be totaled at the end of each round and carried into the next round. A total will be calculated for all rounds.
 
6. The Bible Bowl will consist of 3 Rounds:
 
Round 1 - Jeremiah
Round 2 - COGIC Doctrine
Round 3 - COGIC History
Team members of that particular round may confer during questioning. Any ONE (and only one) team member may answer the question. The Moderator will read the question. A team member should punch the buzzer button, and once a team has been identified as being the first, they have 15 seconds to answer. If the button is punched before the completion of the question, the Moderator will not complete the question, and the selected team will attempt to answer the question. The team member should NOT attempt to answer the question until he is recognized by the judge.
*While the audience is encouraged to cheer for their favorite team, they may not call out answers or in any way help their team. If this is done, there will first be a warning. The 2nd time, the team will lose the appropriate points, and the question will be thrown out, and the opposing team with receive an opportunity to answer the next question.

THE BOOK OF JEREMIAH
Study Facts
***These facts will be phrased as questions for the Bible Bowl. For this round of competition, reference to scripture chapters and verses are given primarily for reference and not for quotation during the Bible Bowl.
1. The book of Jeremiah was written by the prophet whose name the book bears.
 
2. Jeremiah was a priest from the village of Anathoth in Benjamin just a few miles northeast of Jerusalem.
 
3. More is known of the life of Jeremiah than of any other literary prophet.
 
4. Jeremiah began prophesying in the thirteenth year of the reign of King Josiah, when Jeremiah was but a youth.
 
5. Jeremiah prophesied until after Nebuchadnezzar destroyed Jerusalem in 586 B.C. and his ministry lasted a total of about fifty years.
 
6. The Jews opposed Jeremiah and his work from the very outset. First, the citizens of his native Anathoth tried to stop his work and even attempted to kill him. (Jer. 11:18-23.) Even his kinsmen opposed him.
 
7. Under the rule of Jehoiakim, Jeremiah preached a great sermon in the temple in Jerusalem (Jer. 7-9). After this the princes, prophets, and priests of Judah called for the death Jeremiah. Jeremiah was delivered (Jer. 26:24).
 
8. Jeremiah urged King Zedekiah to be faithful to Nebuchadnezzar, but Zedekiah refused (Jer. 27:12-22). The Babylonians besieged Jerusalem, and great suffering resulted.
 
9. Jeremiah was accused of trying to defect to the enemy and was placed in prison, in a dungeon and given a daily ration of bread.

10. When Jeremiah prophesied again against Jerusalem, the king threw him into a dungeon, the bottom of which was filled with mud, into which Jeremiah sank (Jer. 38:1-6), he was rescued by an Ethiopian eunuch.
 
11. He Asked the question, (Jer. 8:18-9:2), “Is there no balm in Gilead, Is there no Physician there?”
 
12. The life of Jeremiah was one of sorrow upon sorrow.
 
13. His people whom he loved and with whom he pleaded unceasingly for fifty years continually refused to hear him, and rewarded his labor with rejection and persecution.
 
14. Jeremiah is called the Weeping Prophet.
 
15. The Lord’s call to Jeremiah was “See, I have set you this day over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out and to pull down, to destroy and to throw down, to build and to plant.” (Jer. 1:10)

THE DOCTRINE OF THE HOLY GHOST (Pneumatology)
 
1. What is the origin or basis for Pneumatology in Greek and what does it mean?
It means spirit, wind or breadth.

It is the study of the person and work of the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit (both come from the Greek word, pneuma).

THE DOCTRINE OF SALVATION (Soteriology)
1. What is Soteriology?
The study of salvation, coming from the Greek word “soteria,” meaning salvation.
 
2. What does salvation mean?
It denotes deliverance, preservation, healing, safety and soundness?
 
3. Does salvation in the NT refer to deliverance?
Yes, it is the spiritual and eternal deliverance granted to those who accept God’s conditions of repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus. Acts 2:38
 
4. How does salvation affect our present experiences?
Salvation affects our present experience through God’s power to deliver from the temptations, tests and trials of life. Matthew 8:25
 
5. Does salvation have power?
Yes. It is the ability of God to keep those who have committed their lives to him. St. Jn 10:27-30.
 
6. How does salvation relate to healing?
It is the healing work of Christ in making people whole, St. Matt. 9:22.
 
7. Are there other scriptural names for salvation?
Yes - repentance, conversion, regeneration, justification, redemption, and deliverance.

Repentance means to have a change of mind in respect to man’s relationship with God, St. Mt. 3:8.
